As a designer, storage space is something you are always looking to get more of in a room without sacrificing on style.
If you are in the kitchen, one of the best ways to accomplish this goal is through the use of open shelves. In addition to serving a helpful function and purpose, they also provide you with an outstanding aesthetic touch that is sure to impress.
If you are considering installing open kitchen shelving in a home, here are some helpful tips to walk you through the process of installing them into the space.
Installing Into a Standard Wall
Typically, installing open kitchen shelves will mean you are putting them directly standard drywall. For this process there are several materials you will need to be successful.
Before you get trigger happy with the drill, measure out the space to make sure the shelves are centered and balanced on the wall. Use a stud finder to find a good spot to begin drilling holes for your brackets. If you are unable to find a stud for the spot you need to drill into, this is where you will need anchors for drilling into drywall only.
- Stud Finder
- Tape Measure
- Long Screws and Anchors
- Power Drill
Once you have measured the space and marked your points, use a power drill and drill a small hole for the screw. For a very secure hold, try and hand screw the screw into the wall so the power drill isn't creating the entire hole and removing material for the screw to hold onto. Tug on the bracket to ensure it is secure to the wall before placing the shelf on top and screwing it into the bracket from the bottom. Repeat this process until each shelf has been installed.
Installing Into Tile
In some cases, such as with a kitchen backsplash, you may find yourself dealing with tile instead of drywall for the area you want your open kitchen shelving. While this may seem like a scary process, it actually isn't as difficult as you might think. This process will involve you using corbels to place the shelves on and will create a beautiful finish.
For this project, you will need:
- Wood Screws
- Shelf Brackets
- Pocket Hole Screws
If you are unable to find a stud where you want to install the shelves, anchors will be able to get the job done just like with drywall. When you have located your position, mark where the top of your corbel bracket will be placed.
When using corbels, you will have to install anchor boards, so drill holes in these first. Once these holes are drills, match the board up on the wall and drill through those holes and into the tile with a diamond drill bit. When these holes are finished, you can attach your corbel with pocket hole screws by creating two pocket holes in the top and one in the bottom of the corbel.
When the corbel has been successfully attached, you can lay the shelf on top and attach it to the corbel by drilling a screw up through the bottom of the board.
